Review of the iPod Nano

Take all the best things you like about an iPod and then pack it all in to one tiny machine and what do you get? The new iPod nano of course!

With 2GB models storing 500 backing tracks and the 4GB model storing 1,000 songs, the pencil-thin iPod Nano puts the entire iPod experience into an incredibly small design - so small in fact, it you can play your backing tracks anywhere, anytime!

Just think - 500 or 1000 backing tracks, skip-free, and stored on a tiny feather-light machine that's small enough to fit in your hand.

The Ipod Nano has an unsurpassed interface, excellent sound quality, and an undeniable cool factor. You won't believe you ears when you hear the quality of this iPod. It retains the same sonic quality as it's bigger brothers but at a fraction of the price. Add to that the fact that this machine is flash-based, you don't have to worry about skipping or dead hard drives - that in itself makes this iPod a must for gigging singers.

iPod nanoMost singers tend to have a fixed repertoire or small core of songs that they perform every night so you could save yourself a bundle by opting for the iPod Nano. Even the smallest 2Gb model will store 500 backing tracks (29 hours of music - you'll probably not sing any more than a couple of hours at a gig so the nano will hold all your backing tracks AND a load of background music to play during your break)!

Pick one up and hold it in your hand, look at it's brilliant color display and just run your thumb around the Click Wheel - you'll be impressed. The iPod Nano can play for up to 14 hours between battery charges and, if you use it to play background music, it can even display the album cover for the song(s) it's playing. How cool is that!

It can store photos, podcasts and audiobooks as well as music and syncs up easily to apples popular iTunes software. It can also be connected to a mountain of iPod accessories.

The iPod Nano Click Wheel is superb - just click to fast-forward, rewind, play, pause or access the menus. The touch-sensitive surface easily and quickly controls the volume or allows you to browse music even when a track is playing. You can do it all without looking too - a real bonus.

This has to be the most powerful portable player around and the iPod Nano is just as happy onstage, at home, on the go, or even in your car. The iPod Nano is currently available in white or black casing and I'd recommend that if you're a singer, you opt for the black casing as it will make the player less obvious onstage.

The nano in use:
Finding and playing your backing tracks on iPod nano is easy - the Menu options let you browse by artist, composer, album, song, genre or playlist. Fed up with singing the same songs in the same order every night? Then click Shuffle Songs and the iPod will play songs at random. The 1.5-inch color display let's you view the album cover of the background music you want to play.

The iTunes Podcast Directory features thousands of free podcasts — radio shows you subscribe to - including favorites from big names as ABC News, Adam Curry, ESPN, KCRW, WGBH and many more. Browse and subscribe to podcasts, then sync them to your iPod nano and listen anytime, anywhere. Podcasts appear in their own menu on your iPod nano, so you can navigate to them easily.

The iTunes Music Store is stocked with more than 11,000 audiobooks including such exclusives as the entire Harry Potter series so you can catch up on your reading, even in the dressing room as you wait to go onstage. Browse audiobooks from their own menu on your iPod Nano. Set a chapter marker when you stop “reading,” and pick up the audiobook during your break or after your performance - right where you left off! You can even change the read speed to suit.

The iPod nano can store up to 25,000 photos you can sync from your Mac or Windows PC via iTunes. Use the Click Wheel to scroll through photo thumbnails the same way you scroll through song titles. To see a photo full-screen, simply click the center button. You can even view photo slideshows, complete with music. Just select Slideshow Settings and choose the time between slides, the transition effect and the music.

Have you ever lost or forgotten your diary and can't remember where you're gigging this week or looking for an agent, venue or friends address/telephone number? Worry no more - the iPod nano lets you take your calendar and contacts with you. It supports Address Book and iCal on the Mac and Outlook or Outlook Express on the PC, plus industry-standard vCalendar and vCard files. iTunes syncs your calendars and contacts so you can access everything with a quick spin of the Click Wheel.

iPod nano’s World Clock lets you check the time, fall asleep to music and wake up to it, too. Open more than one clock to scroll between as many time zones as you choose. The clock faces even appear white or black to indicate day or night in different time zones. Want to doze to your favorite tunes? Turn on the Sleep Timer. Just remember to set the built-in Alarm Clock to your favourite wake-up tune. Your calendar, contacts and the World Clock appear in Extras, along with a few more handy items. Take the Screen Lock, for example. Use the Click Wheel to choose a four-digit combination and protect your iPod nano from prying eyes. Store Notes that sync your to-do lists. Or try the built-in Stopwatch that logs your best times. And when it’s finally time to play, iPod nano features four fun games: Music Quiz, Solitaire, Brick and Parachute.

if you are a singer, you probably have two or three backing track versions of the same song - you can rate each song on your iPod so that you will always know you are about to sing the correct version. As well as this, you can also create playlists right from your iPod nano. To create an On-the-Go Playlist, select a song, then press and hold the center button until the song flashes. To rate a song as it plays, click the center button until you reach the ratings screen. Scroll the Click Wheel to choose a star rating and press the center button to save. Your On-the-Go Playlists and song ratings even sync back to your computer.

You can change how your iPod nano sounds and more, all from the Settings menu - here you can customize menus, check capacity, change your language etc. Click About to see how many songs are on your iPod nano and how much capacity you have left. Click Main Menu to select what items appear in your Main Menu or tweak the built-in equalizer to suit your songs. Everything you need, from backlight timer to audiobook speed, all appear in Settings.

Conclusion
Apple have done it again and the iPod nano is yet another design that is sure to turn heads. The design concept is simple: take a full-size iPod and make it really slim (Apple tell us that it's 62 percent smaller than the old iPod Mini which the Nano has replaced). The end result is a truly spectacular product!
